Commercial vs. Artistic

Commercial

This picture as a whole looks more commercial than artistic because it's primarily a very posed picture. The focus is set on the subject in the middle who is centered. It looks like a clothing add because the logos on his clothes are very clear and there's a lot of space around the edges for magazine cover text. The edited look of the picture also makes it look more commercial than the raw look of artistic photos.

Artistic

In contrast to the first picture, this one is a lot more artistic. It doesn't have the "I'm selling you something" feel to it when you look at it like a commercial photo does. It focuses more on the personality of the subject and has a more raw look to it. It's an unaltered glance into this boy's life, making it artistic and not commercial.

Beauty

In my mind, beauty is an adjective that describes majesty, something close to nature, unaltered from its pure state. The picture* to the right is what I think of when the word "beauty" is spoken. Everything about this picture is majestic and colorful. It's like a glimpse into paradise.

Assignment 7: Portraits

Classic Portrait

This portrait is a self portrait of myself holding a light, just for effect. I really like this picture because it's so simple, yet very interesting at the same time. To add some colors boosts, I increased the temperature and lowered the tint to make it appear warmer against the black background. I increased exposure to make the natural light shine even more off my skin and body. The blacks were also increased to give a little more contrast between lights and darks. Finally, I bumped up the orange, yellow, and green hues to give my skin and shirt more coloration.

Environmental Portrait

This is an environmental picture taken of my little cousin during Easter and I was able to use it for this assignment. Before I edited it, the colors were drab and not very vibrant, so I increased the temperature for warmth, brought up the fill lights and blacks to lighten the overall photo and blacks to make my cousin clearly stand out. I then increased the yellow, green, and orange hues to make the background more appealing.

Classic Portrait

This is my favorite portrait because it's of my little brother, Kaden. Again, because he's a little kid, I wanted to keep the softness of his hands and face clear. I increased the temperature as usual and decreased the tints to bring warmth into the picture, making it appear more inviting. Then I increased the recovery, fill light, and blacks. I increased the brightness and then the contrast to balance it out. I framed it just around his head and shoulders, intentionally making sure that the background was blurred. The natural lighting worked great in this photo because I took it in the brightest part of my house.

Project 6: Daguerreotype and Tilt-Shift

Daguerreotype

This picture was taken up at Washington Park near the Hoyt Arboretum. I then turned it into a daguerreotype using Photoshop. I applied an old frame to give it the extra push for the vintage look. I like this photo because it just appears very simple and blank.

I took this photo at Washington Park on a field trip. I used Photoshop to make it a daguerreotype and then added another old frame to it. I found the perfect metallic texture to blend with the original picture that gave it the scratched, stained look. This is my favorite daguerreotype that I made because the way the rock blends into the grass and the texture.

Tilt-Shift

This tilt-shift photo was taken on the Vista bridge on one of our field trips. Originally, it was a pretty lame picture. However, once I blurred the background, cropped out the sky, and increased the contrast and colors, it looked really cool. The tilt-shift effect worked a lot better than I anticipated, which was great.

Assignment 6: Lighting, Reflection, and Shadows

Shadows

This is my favorite shadow picture because it turns a regular, colorful children's toy into an eerie shadow. I set the light at an angle and purposefully kept part of the toy in the field of view to bring in some interest and context as to what the shadow is originating from.

Reflection

I like this reflection picture because it's not instantly apparent that it is actually a reflection. If you concentrate and focus your attention into the lens of the camera, you can see part of the Hawthorne Bridge in the reflection. I think it's a unique angle to look at and brings in the interest of the viewer.

Chiaroscuro

I set this picture up in my hallway of Thomas the engine going into his station. All I did for the lighting was turn off all the lights and shine a flashlight behind Thomas. I really like this picture because of its incorporations of chiaroscuro, shadows, and back lighting.

Silhouette

This photo is my dad's chair in front of his desktop computer. This, just like the kid's toy shadow is also intended to appear somewhat creepy and confusing. For these reasons I really like it because it's hard to tell what the subject really is at first glance.

Back Lighting

Although, this back lighting photo is relatively simple, it's cool because of the subject (Griffin) being in focus and clearly in color while the rest of the picture appears washed out. It looks as if it's a Nike ad in itself!
